The Acceptance Letter

Episode 2- The End of the Rainbow

It wasn’t long for the time to bring Eila’s high school completion. She had already been accepted to the school of Phoenix University in hopes to bring her wings large enough for her to fly! However, the council from the Devoted Society have attempted to coerce her with an invitation to become the strongest hunteress. She refuses to become a part of a cult of hunters using other hunters to do their evil favors. Eila’s parents urged her to move toward a safe option, such as the Devoted. The Devoted Society brought upon an opportunity with an abundance of money and the honor to teach others the same path from the highest position.

Eila stared at the school’s representative, emotionless. Without a word, she finally looks at their hand presenting an offer letter for her to take. With a made up mind, she glares at their eyes as she gently takes the letter from their fingers.

“I will contact you. Do not contact me,” Eila responds with anger in her voice.

As Eila walks away excusing herself, her mother humbly apologizes urging the representative peace and promise of Eila’s contact. Eila heads towards her rooms with the voices of her mother and the uninvited guests fading into the hallway walls. She disappears swiftly into the comfort of her dark room.

The evening fell into the dark late night. Midnight approaches, and a light glowing beneath one of the doors in the dark, creaky hallway is accompanied by faint hums of Eila’s voice.

“I just want to leave. If I could I would leave today but the dorms will be ready in a month.”

Eila sits alone on the soft beige rug with patterns made by her restless fingers. Her eyes search around the room for anything to bring her dopamine as she listens to her friend responding with reassurance. She shifts her body weight hugging her knees and pressing the phone on her shoulder with her left ear.

“Yeah. I’m gonna start packing tomorrow morning,” Eila sighs.

”Hey, you got this. We’ll have so much fun once we’re on campus together!” Trevor beams to Eila.

“You’re right,” Eila huffs in response. She scans the room, her eyes pausing on a letter from her boyfriend; It had aggressive red and blue ink scribbled on the crumpled paper. Eila shudders and turns her head away looking out the window.

“Hey, I’m pretty tired. I’ll call you tomorrow.”

Eila hangs up after bidding goodnight. Minutes quickly pass midnight as she stares at the contacts list on her phone screen. Alone in the brightly lit room in the night, she finally rings her sister impulsively.

“What’s wrong?” Eila’s sister seems to sense the stress in her sister’s voice before she had a chance to speak.

Minutes turn to many, and Eila’s sister had been able to remove the pain of the entire day’s events. Anticipating her sister’s arrival the next day has brought her strength to push away her fear. The hum of the phone fades to a black screen lying on the rug.

The clock glares its light through the sunrise reading 4:58 am. The duvet is strewn over the bed and the floor is covered in clothes, papers and a damp towel. The sound of rummaging from the bathroom soon stops with a singular knock from the light switch. Tiptoeing with one foot after another, Eila shuffles quickly out of the bathroom to not wake her parents. Her disheveled curls bounce with each step as she disappears into her room again. Her continuous rummaging with the occasional thud became muffled hours later by her mother’s clanking from the kitchen.

“Eila! Breakfast!” She yells resoundingly.

“Co-ming!” Eila responds with a hiccup. Distracted from organizing her things into different bags boxes, her mother’s repeats her call louder. Eila to prances to the corner of her room, grabs a stray blanket. She jumps around the papers and tosses the blanket over the bags and boxes in attempt to hide her plan. She skipped to the kitchen to join her parents in breakfast.

Eila has been in her room all day moving her things from one spot to another. Whenever her mother would walk in, Eila would make up the excuse of “spring cleaning”. She isn’t entirely lying as there were things she wanted to rid of, so her mother believed her. Regardless, the daunting feeling of telling her mother the truth made her heart race and mind fuzzy. Suddenly, she was neasous all over again. Soon, another knock on the door and Eila whips her head up from where she sat next to the closet floor. Eila watches Avery walk in trying to find to step between the piles on the floor. She scans the room and finally meets her eyes with Eila and lights up a smile for her.

“Hi hunny!” Avery greets with warmth in her voice.

Eila nearly trips trying to quickly walk over to her sister and jumps into a hug.

“You want some ice cream?” Avery adds, “Let’s talk in the car.”

The smell of a barbecue and warm dew breathes with the heat of the summer’s rays. The wind of cool air introduces the first day of the semester shaking up the leaves holding their strongest green colors of the season. Within the roads of Phoenix University is bustling music and groups of students walking around the campus grounds. Pebbles of gravel kick up from underneath a pair of sandals and two pairs of sneakers as they walk through the opening of the garden’s path. Eila gasps with happiness, and the light of the new world glows through her sun-tanned skin.
